The 5-Foot Bunsen Burner

On the way home, I saw this:

What a 5-foot Bunsen Burner would look like.

A super sized, 5-foot Bunsen burner in an empty parking lot. Connected to the über-burner was a 20-foot long hose that dropped into an opened manhole. The flame was easily at least 10 feet high. What was the point? Given the length of time the flame was on (2-3 hours), maybe the gas company was bleeding off a natural gas line. But what’s the point of that? Was there a dangerous buildup of gas pressure as a result of the previous day’s rain? Was it related to the power failure in the area two days earlier? Or was there a massive sewage buildup that resulted in dangerous levels of methane? Grog, if you’re reading this, give some insight on this.
